How is generally a question word, such as How are you? or How are you going to get to the doctor today?
You are correct in assuming that way and how have similar meaning and it truly depends on the context.
Example: I do not know how to speak German OR I do not speak German. Another example: What is the best way to learn English?
It is grammatically wrong to state the way how, easily changing how to "to", for example, The way to achieve success is by working hard.
