Non-specific vs. absolute nouns

Question

Hello all, I am learning Farsi from Thackston's book and I am in lesson three and I still don't write get them. At first, I thought it was the difference between adding a definite or indefinite article. But I spoke with my dad who is from Iran and said that the non-specific means if you are referring to a particular thing (anytime you use این) . Please help me understand this concept!
