There's a lot of reasons GIS is useful. In my opinion, the main reason is because it allows for a visualization of data in a way more people understand. Visualizing the data can improve interventions in many areas of life. My background is mostly public health. An example of GIS in public health is my research project on how we can use GIS and other technology to manage vaccine-preventable diseases in refugee populations. Can you explain a bit more what you are looking to understand.
