The dopamine neuron, or pleasure receptor, is released in response to an acute pleasurable reward. Repeated activation, or release, of this pleasure receptor leads to a gradual loss of dopamine receptors in the brain. With the loss of neurons comes tolerance: a situation in which more and more rewards, or "hits," are needed to feel the same impact as before. The result is addiction.
