The purpose of a grid system is to serve as a reference for a specific location which is given both an "x" and "y" coordinate. The benefits of an "x and y" coordinate system: makes analysis simple (such as finding distance between two points), visualization is so clear that even non-scientists can understand, data is easy to work and collaborate with, geographers can add more elements to this system, and the grid system generally serves as the foundation to more important tasks such as GEOINTEL, disaster response, planning, etc.
