Oh, it's so relevant! Artists are oftentimes inspired by their culture and the world around them. Therefore, artists will comment on historical events in their work, often giving us an added perspective on the events and happenings of that artist's time. Artists also exist all along the political spectrum, so two artists may even have different opinions and commentaries on the same event! Studying art and art history alongside history adds a lot of subjectivity (as opposed to the cold facts often present in historical texts) and anecdotal evidence to your findings.
