There are a couple different ways you can think about this problem:
1) How many 1/8's make up 1 pound? 8 (1/8, 2/8, 3/8, 4/8, 5/8, 6/8, 7/8, 8/8). So, if he has 6 pounds of lunch meat, 8 sandwiches x 6 pounds = 48 sandwiches.
or
2) 6 ÷ 1/8. To divide a whole number by a fraction, first put the whole number over 1 to make it a "fraction." So, 6/1. Then, to divide two fractions, use the "keep, change, flip" trick. Keep the first fraction the same (6/1), change division to multiplication, and flip the second fraction (8/1). Then, multiply the fractions by multiplying the numerators (tops of the fractions) and denominators (bottoms of the fractions).
So, 6/1 x 8/1 = 48/1, which is 48 sandwiches.
