The length of a rectangle is 4 more than two times a number. The width is the number plus 3, if the area of the rectangle is 24, what is the length of the rectangle?

Let the number be n

Than the length is L = 2n + 4

and the width is W = n + 3

Since A = L W and the area is 24, we have

24 = (2n+4)(n + 3) FOIL tnis

24 = 2n² +10n + 12 Subtract 24

0 = 2n² + 10n -12 Factor

2 (n + 6) (n - 1) =0 set each factor = 0 ( 2 cannot = 0 )

(n + 6) = 0 or (n - 1) =0

n = -6 or n = 1

if n = -6, the length and width would be negative -- not possible, so

n = 1 and L = 6, W = 4
