To figure out this problem you will need to make 1 inch into a fraction that can be used alongside 3/8 inch. To do this you will want to make your denominator the same numbers. I suggest using the same denominator as 3/8. This would mean you convert your 1 inch to 8/8 inches. 1=8/8
This means we can reformat your equation to
8/8-3/8=
Remember that the denominator does not change, only the numerators are subtracting. This means we are only looking at the 8-3 on the top, the bottom numbers will not change. 8/8-3/8=5/8.
