At a basketball game, a team made 51 successful shots. They were a combination of 1- and 2-point shots. The team scored 83 points in all. Write and solve a system of equations to find the number of each type of shot.

I very much need help as I am not so good at thinking mathematically.

Let x = number of 1-point shots

y = number of 2-point shots

" 51 successful shots." means x + y = 51

(points for a given type of shot) = ( points per shot) * (number of shots) means

points for 1-point shots + points for 2-point shots = 83

1x = 2y = 83

The system of equations is:

x + 2y = 83

x + y = 51

y = 32

Put the value of y into either equation and solve for s:

x + 32 = 51

x = 19
