Since Bill drove 3 times farther
3x = the number of miles that Bill drove
# of miles Tom drove + # of miles Bill drove = 3200
x+3x=3200
Combine like terms
4x=3200
Divide both sides by 4
4x/4=3200/4
x=800 miles
800 miles is the number of miles Tom drove
3(800) = 2400 miles is the number of miles that Bill drove
