Louisiana was vitally important because of the port of New Orleans. All of the trade that came down the Mississippi was money, and any country that had that port would benefit greatly. This was the main driving force for the Louisiana Purchase. Jefferson knew how important that port was and was afraid that it would be closed, so he sends delegates to France to negotiate and ended up getting much more than he anticipated.
