If we assign everything a variable in the word problem, we can say that k = the cost of each big helium balloon, b = the number of balloons Katie wants to buy, and c = the total cost for buying the balloons. Using this, we can say that c = kb. However, since the problem gives us that k = 8, we can simply subsitute 8 in for k in the equation, allowing us to conclude that c = 8b.
