T and J are their PRESENT ages:
T+17 = (4/3)(J+17) <--- in 17 years, Tyler will be (4/3) times as old as Jake
T-3 = 3(J-3)
T-3 = 3J - 9
T = 3J - 6 <-- use this for later
3J-6 + 17 = (4/3)(J+17)
3J + 11 = (4/3)(J+17)
9J + 33 = 4J + 68
5J = 35
J = 7
Jake is 7, Tyler is 15 per above equation in bold
In 17 years, Tyler will be 32 and Jake will be 2, and (4/3)(24) = 32.
3 years ago, Tyler was 12 and Jake was 4 and 4*3=12.
So yes, they check out.
Jake is 7, Tyler is 15
