Question

a college basketball team charges $5 admission to the general public for its games, while students at the college pay only $2. if the attendance for last nights game was 1200 people and the total reciepts were $5,250, how many of the people in attendance were students and how many were not students?

Let x = # of general public tickets

Let y = # of college tickets

Then x + y = 1200

and 5x + 2y = 5250

Solve simultaneously and find that x = 950 and y = 250.
