Area of a circle

Question

A wire is shaped to form a semicircle, with an area of 180cm squared. The wire is reshaped into a square. What is the area of the square?

Circumference of a semi-circle is (1/2)pi d + d = pir+2r = r(pi+2)

Area of a semi-circle is (1/2)pir^2 = 180 cm

pir^2 = 360

r^2 = 360/pi

r = sqr(360/pi)

r(pi+2)= [sqr(360/pi)](pi+2) = 10.7(5.14)=55.04

divide by 4 to get the side of the square

55.04/4 = 13.76

square that side to get the area of the square

13.76^2 = 189 1/3 cm.

More area can be enclosed in a circle than in a square

but slightly more area is enclosed in a square than a semi-circle
