at noon Nathan whizzed off toward the gym one hour later rameses whizzed off in the opposite direction at a speed of 200kph less than that of nathan. If they were 11,800 kilometers apart at 5pm, how fast did each travel?

Let x = speed of Nathan.  Then Rameses' speed was x - 200.

 

Distance = rate x time.  Nathan travelled 5 hours, so his distance is 5x.  Rameses travelled 4 hours, so his distance is 4 (x - 200)

 

5x + 4(x - 200) = 11,800

   5x + 4x - 800 = 11,800

                    9x = 12,600

                      x = 1400

 

Nathan went 1400 kph, and Rameses went 1200 kph.
