Question

1 pound buys 1.8 dollars. I change 75 pounds into dollars, spend 100 dollars, and change the remainder back into pounds:

A) How many dollars do I get for 75 pounds?

B) How many pounds do I get when I change the remainder back? (Give your answer 2 decimal places)

Hi Ginny,

The best way to do this is to set up a proportion. Since 1 pound = 1.8 dollars, then

1 pound/1.8 dollars = 75 pounds/ x dollars...cross multiply to find the number of dollars for A)

For part B, subtract $100 from your answer to A, and set up...

1 pound/1.8 dollars = Y pounds/answer to A - $100
