In the Gospel of Mark 3:24, Jesus explains that "If a Kingdom is divided by itself, it cannot stand. He then adds, "If a House is divided by itself it cannot stand," in Mark 3:25. Lincoln, in one of his most popular of speeches mirrored these same words regarding our nation at that time.
Lincoln faced a nation which was divided over the institution of slavery, sectionalism, and families which were being torn asunder due to that institution. While Douglas was one who was directly against this institution, Lincoln understood the fraught situation the Union found herself in.
