The length of a rectangle is five times its width. The area of the rectangle is 245 square centimeters. What is the dimensions of the rectangle.

First lets write down what we know

1. L = 5W
2. W = W
3. A = 245

Area of an rectangle:

1. A = L x W
2. 245 = 5W x W
3. 245 = 5W^2

Divide both sides by 5 to isolate the variable

1. 49 = w^2

Now we take the square root of both sides leaving

1. w = 7

Now we know that the width of this rectangle is 7.

To find the length you can do one of two methods.

1. You can take the area (245) and divide it by the width (7) getting 35 as the length
2. Or you can plug the width back into the length formula so you can multiply 7 and 5 and still get 35.
