First lets write down what we know
- L = 5W
- W = W
- A = 245
Area of an rectangle:
- A = L x W
- 245 = 5W x W
- 245 = 5W^2
Divide both sides by 5 to isolate the variable
- 49 = w^2
Now we take the square root of both sides leaving
- w = 7
Now we know that the width of this rectangle is 7.
To find the length you can do one of two methods.
- You can take the area (245) and divide it by the width (7) getting 35 as the length
- Or you can plug the width back into the length formula so you can multiply 7 and 5 and still get 35.
