The indigenous peoples of the Americas had no exposure to typhoid (caused by Salmonella bacteria) prior to the Columbian exchange. Therefore, they had no immunity and this disease, and several others (smallpox, measles, chicken pox, whooping cough, bubonic plague, typhus and malaria). Without immunity, many people died of disease. It is estimated that upwards of 80–95 percent of the Native American population was decimated within the first 100–150 years following 1492 (Newson, 2001).
