percentage number word problem

computer theft safeware, an insurance company reported that 591,000 laptop computers were stolen in 2001, a 53% increase from the number stolen the year before. if these numbers are correct, how many laptop computers were stolen in 2000? round to nearest thousand.

how did you get 1.53?

It's how I represent a 53% increase.  If I multiply a number by 1, then the result is the same number.  If I multiply a number by 1.10, then the new number will be 10% more than the original number.
