A boys to girls ratio of 17:23 means you can get the number of boys by multiplying the total number of students by
17/(17 + 23),
and you can get the total number of girls by multiplying the total number of students by 23/(17 + 23).
Boys:
[17/(17 + 23)](300) = 127.5
As Lauren pointed out in her Comment, there has to be an error in the problem statement, unless you can have half of a boy and half of a girl among the 300 (which probably are not Spartans 😀).
