The assumption here is that objects in the same location on Earth will receive the sun's rays at an equal angle, so, their "sides" ( height, length of shadow cast, and hypotenuse of the right angle that is formed, will be proportional to each other.

 

Draw a picture and see that:

12/8 = x/20
