I think they might be getting at the concept of the "Americas," that is, we have North America, Central America and South America. In that case, Spanish is the official language of Mexico, part of North America, and the Central American countries such as Guatemala and Honduras. Most of the South American countries also have Spanish as the official language, except for Brazil, which uses Portuguese, and other small countries, such as French Guiana.
