From the first sentence, we can write
E + 2P = 90 {Eq 1}.
From the second sentence, we get
E - P = 45,
→ E = 45 + P {Eq 2}.
Substituting {Eq 2} in to {Eq 1}, we have
45 + P + 2P = 90
→ 3P = 45
→ P = 15
→ E = 60
So a pen costs $15 and an exercise book costs $60.
