a shop has a sale that offers 20% off all prices, on the final day they reduce the prices by 25%, alex buys a hairdryer on the final day. work out the overall percentage reduction on the hairdryer

Let's say the hair dryer is originally priced for $20 

 

20% off of $20 would be:

$20(.20 ) = $4 

$20-$4= $16 

OR

$20(1-.20)=$20(.80)=$16

 

An additional 25% off would be:

$16(.25 ) = $4
$16-$4= $12
OR
$16(1-.25)=$16(.75)=$12

[$20(1-.20)]*(1-.25)=$12
