reflexive verbs are those where the action is related to the concept of "self" . It is like adding the concept of myself to an action. I wake up myself " me despierto" , I shave myself " me afeito". In English it would be incorrect and unnecessary to add the self , but it is how it works in Spanish.

Great question! Reflexive verbs are verbs you can do to yourself or someone else. When you add the reflexive ending it can even change the meaning of the verb. For example- "dormir" means "to sleep", but "dormirse" means "to fall asleep".

Relexive verbs are actions that a person perfroms on themselves such as brushing teeth or putting on clothes.

Reflexive verbs are things that we normally do to ourselves. We could do them to others, or others could do them to us, but generally speaking, they are behaviors that people do themselves. 

For example: 

Showering, shaving, brushing ones teeth, bathing. 

 

These are all things we could do to others, or others could do to us (shout out to the moms and dads who had to walk us through all of these things the first times we did them!) but, eventually they're things we do by ourselves, to ourselves.

In the reflexive verbs, someone is performing the action in oneself: I wash my hands, they brush their hair...different than I wash the car, I brush the dog.

 

In Spanish, there are some reflexive verbs that are not reflexive in English.

 

Some verbs in Spanish "behave" in the same way (using reflexive pronouns) but are not reflexive itself...but I will keep it in simple terms and don´t go there... :-)
