How do I get better at conversing?

Question

Despite studying Spanish for 3 years, I can't understand most of what's said in conversation. My written skills are good. How do I get better at conversing?

Either join or start a Spanish speaking group. Find people who are fluent and ones who wish, like you, to practice and 'educate' your ear for Spanish. Buena suerte!

I used music and movies to improve my ear.  I found a Spanish speaking artist I like and translated a few of their songs.  I then listened to the same songs over and over and over again, until I could sing along.  I did the same for movies, watched a movie in Spanish that I already knew in English, watched Spanish with Spanish subtitles, and watched the same movies over and over and over.  

 

It helps for you to hear the same conversations over and over, which you know what is being said (by translate and read the lyrics/subtitles).  You ear begins to pick up on what is being said and integrates the tones.  It is more effective than listening to new conversations all the time, of which you do not know what is being said.

Try to listen as much Spanish as possible: music, tv, web series, You tube videos and talk with Spanish speakers (ask them to repeat and talk slow if possible)

I good trick is to turn on the subtitles in Spanish, that way your brain can make the connection between the words you already know and the sound associated with them

Keep trying... Do not get discourage.  This ALWAYS works for language: the more you use it, the better you get.
