The past simple or "pretérito indefinido" in Spanish, is normally used to talk about completed actions in the past. The auxiliar verb "haber" plus the past participle form the "pretérito perfecto", and it makes reference to actions that have a connection to the present. Normally, "pretérito indefinido" is used with time expressions like ayer, la semana pasada, el mes pasado, el año pasado, etc. While "pretérito perfecto" is used with expressions like hoy, esta mañana, esta tarde, esta noche, este mes, etc.

The simple past is the most basic past tense form. Ex: I ate yesterday. I did my homework. —> Yo comí ayer. Yo hice la tarea. While the past participle is what is used in conjunction with helping verbs, like with the past perfect. Ex: I have not eaten today. I have already done my homework. —> No he comido hoy. Ya he hecho la tarea. In both of these examples, the verb is ’have (not) + action.’ In Spanish, the past perfect is used by ‘haber + past participle,’ so in these cases the past participles were ‘comido’ eaten, and ‘hecho’ made.
