3x - 4 + 4 = -3 + 4

3x = 1

3x/3 = 1/3

x = 1/3

 

You are already given that 3x - 4 = -3, so (-3)² = 9. Since x = 1/3...

 

9 + 6(1/3) - 8 = 9 + 2 - 8 = 3

Given:  3x-4 = -3

That means:  6x-8 = -6

 

So, (-3)²-6 = 9-6 = 3                   [note: not all problems will have such easy substitution]

First, solve for x in

 

3x - 4 = -3.
