My understanding of fraction is that we are catering to part of a whole. Is that technically correct?

What i mean to ask is if a/b is the fraction a the numerator can take any value positive, negative or 0 whereas the denominator represented by b over here should always be positive as whole should logically mean only positive number as part of nothing or less than that makes no sense.

I do not know what you mean by "catering" in the context of this question.  The only conditions for a/b to be defined are that:

 

(i)   "a" can be any real number

 

(ii)  "b" can be any real number except 0
