The ratio of Matt to Stanley's savings was 2 : 7 at first. After Matt saved another $120 and Stanley saved another $30, Matt had twice of Stanley's savings. How much did Matt have in the end?

X is the amount of money they have combined.

(2/9) X = M  and (7/9)X = S

 

 

M+120 = 2( S + 30)

 

(2/9)X + 120  =  2(  (7/9)X + 30)

 

 (2/9)X + 120 = (14/9)X + 60

 

120 - 60 = (14/9)X - (2/9)X

 

60 = (12/9)X

 

60*9/12 = X

X=45

 

 

M = (2/9)X = (2/9)(45) = 10

 

S = (7/9)X = (7/9)(45) = 35

 

 

CHECK:

   10/35 = 2/7

(10+120) = 130 = 2 * 65 = 2 * (35 + 30)

 

 

In the beginning, Matt had $10 and Stanley had $35.

In the end, Matt had $130 and Stanley had $65
