Some college buddies decided to take a vacation in Florida together. They each had to chip in $90 for
the week’s lodging. They tried to convince three more people to go, because then the cost per person
would have been reduced by $22.50, but they were unsuccessful. How many buddies actually went?

n = number that actually went

 

n(90) = what they paid

 

(n + 3)(90 - 22.50) = what they would have paid with 3 more people

 

The amounts paid have to be the same, so

 

90n = (n + 3)(90 - 22.50)

 

Solve for n and get 

 

n = 9
