The steps to long division are:
1. Divide
2. Multiply
3. Subtract
4. Bring Down
Repeat these 4 steps ad nauseum.
Synthetic Division simplifies the process.
First, change the sign on the devisor. Put it in a box on the left hand side.
Next, write just the coefficients of the main equation. Remember to include 0s for any missing terms.
Skip a space and draw a horizontal lines.
Now you are finally able to do the problem. The steps for synthetic division are
1. Bring down
2 .Multiply
3. Add
Repeat steps 2 and 3 until you run out of terms.
Your answer will be a polynomial one degree less than what you started with. Put the numbers on the bottom line as coefficients of the terms.
