A rectangles area is 3x^2+x-2. Both the length and the width are then decreased by 3 inches. What is the new area?

If we factor 3x² + x - 2 we get (3x - 2)(x + 1)

 

Let length = (3x - 2) and Width = (x + 1) (Doesn't matter which is which for this problem)

 

Subtract 3 from each expression to get

 

(3x - 5)(x - 2)

 

Multiply these binomials back together to get the new area polynomial.
