One takes 3/7 eats 1/2, one takes 1/2 eats 3/7, how many do they eat?

Two friends eat some nuts from a packet. One friend takes 3/7 from the packet and eats 1/2 of what she takes. The other friend takes 1/2 from the packet and eats 3/7 of what she takes. How much did each friend eat?

Answer 1

Person 1)  1/2 OF 3/7 = (1/2)(3/7) = 3/14

Person 2)  3/7 OF 1/2 = (3/7)(1/2) = 3/14

Each friend ate 3/14 of the peanuts.

 

Together they ate:

(1/2)(3/7) + (3/7)(1/2) = 3/7 total eaten

 

Basically we have half of 3/7 plus half of 3/7 sums to 3/7
