A group of tourists travelled from one city to another in 3 days. On the first day they covered 60 miles plus 1/5 of the entire distance. On the second day, they covered 20 miles plus ¼ of the entire distance. Finally, on the third day they completed the trip after covering 25 miles plus 23/80 of the entire distance. Is there enough information to determine the distance between the two cities? If yes, find the distance.

x = unknown distance between the two cities

 

day 1: 60+x/5

day 2: 20+x/4

day 3: 25 +23x/80

 

total is x, so

 

(60+20+25) + (16+20+23)x/80 = x

105 = 21x/80

x=400 miles

 

 

day1: 60+80=140

day2:20+100=120

day3: 25 +23*5 = 140

 

total = 140+120+140 = 400 miles
