I'm originally from Brooklyn also.
The first thing I would do is change 1 and 2/3 into the improper fraction 5/3. Replacing we'd get
5/3 : 5/4. I would then multiply each by the common denominator of 12. 5/3 *12 = 60/3 =20 and 5/4 *12 = 60/4 =15. Replacing we'd get 20:15 is equivalent. As long as we multiply or divide both of these numbers by the same thing, we'll get equivalent ratios.
So I'll divide both by 5 to get 4:3. I can then take that and multiply both numbers by let's say 7 to get 28:21 or by 3 to get 12:9.
Remember that a ratio can be written as a fraction. So 4:3 is the same as 4/3. to find equivalent fractions, you multiply numerator and denominator by the same number......so it's really the same rule for ratios.
