You have been given a 1 L stock of 1M NaCl (MWT 58.4 g/mol). What volume do you need to prepare 100 ml of a 10 mM stock?

C₁*V₁ = C₂*V₂

 

where: C₁ = 1 M NaCl = 1000 mM NaCl

           V₁ = ? L of 1 M NaCl solution

           C₂ = 10 mM NaCl 

           V₂ = 100 mL of 10 mM NaCl

 

Solve for V₁:

 

V₁ = V₂*(C₂/C₁) = 100 mL*(10 mM/1000 mM) = 1 mL
