Simple percentage question

Okay help me out here. If an item cost $450 and it is 10% off I am told it is $45. But I am confused. If you move the decimal two places it is $4.50. Help!!

To find how much the item costs if it is 10% off, you can multiply 450 x 0.1 because 10%=0.1. That should get you 45. Now, to find how much the item costs with the discount, you'd subtract 450-45 = 405. You don't need to move the decimal two places because it's only 10%. If you were finding 1%, then you would move it two places.
