Sharing in a ratio

The ratio of boys to girls in a group is 3:1. If there are 28 more boys than girls, work out how many people there are in total.

Let x = the number of girls

Let x + 28 = the number of boys

boys/girls: (x + 28)/x = 3/1

3x = x + 28

2x = 28

x = 14 girls

x + 28 = 14 + 28 = 42 boys

Total = 56 people
