word problem formula needed

If someone gets paid 5 cents per minute for one chore, and 3 cents per minute for another kind of chore, and they work for 50 mins. total, What is a formula to show how much they earned?

Let t = the number of minutes worked on the 3 cent/minute task.  The number of minutes worked on the 5 cent/minute task will be (50-t).

 

Earnings (in dollars) = ($0.03)*(t) + ($0.05)*(50-t)

The key on this type of question is to use the underlying information given in order to form an expression that relates the variables to one another. On this one I would do

Earnings = 0.05(t) + 0.03(50 – t)         

In that formulation “t” would represent the amount of time spent doing the 5 cent chore … so then since you get a total of 50 minutes that means that you would have (50 – t) available for the 3 cent chore
