Solve with two equations

Question

You bought cookies for  $1 each and bags of chips for $5 each.  The receipt also shows that the number of cookies you bought is 12 more than the number of chips bags.  If you spent $48 how many cookies and chip bags did you buy?

Answer 1

cookies = X and chips = Y

X number of cookies = 12 + Y

each chips is 5 dollars, so 5Y

 

5Y+(12+Y) = 48

6Y+12 = 48

6Y = 48-12

6Y = 36

Y = 36/6

Y = 6

X = 12+Y

X = 12+6

X = 18

 

CHECK:

X+Y=48

18*1+6*5=48

18+30=48

48=48

X = cookies

Y = chips

 

X = Y + 12

 

1*X + 5*Y = 48

 

X + 5Y = 48

 

(y+12)+ 5y = 48

 

6y + 12 = 48

 

6y = 36

 

y = 6

 

x = 6+12 = 18

 

1*18 + 5*6 = 18 + 30 = 48
