So, Caroline, to expand on both answers...

 

2/3 + x = 3/4

 

The easiest way to find the common denominator is to multiply the two denominators.  3 x 4 = 12

 

Now, 2/3 = ?/12. Since we said 3 x 4 = 12, we also multiply the numerator by 4 to get 8/12. This looks like...

 

2/3 x 4/4 = 8/12

 

Remember, 4/4 = 1, and anything multiplied by 1 is itself!

 

3/4 = ?/12. 4 x 3 = 12, so...

 

3/4 x 3/3 = 9/12

 

Now we have 8/12 + x = 9/12. Subtracting 8/12 from both sides, we end up with...

 

x = 1/12
