When you use 3 trials to average the speed of something you are making sure that your results are as accurate as possible. Multiple trials reduces the effect of a fluke, or unusual result. For example, if Fred can run a mile in 4 minutes,Sarah can ride a mile in 20 minutes, and Louis can ride a mile in 2 minutes, if you picked any one of them, your results would not be an accurate picture of what is normal. If you average the three, your answer is more accurate.
