The word problem I need help solving is:

The senior class at High School A and High School B planned separate trips to the local amusement park. The senior class at High School B planned separate trips to the local amusement park. The senior class st High School A rented and filled 5 vans and 11 buses with 287 students. High School B rented and filled 10 vans and 11 buses with 332 students. Each van and each bus carried the same number of students. Find the number of students in each van and in each bus.

Answer 1

Let x = the number of students in a van

Let y = the number of students on a bus

    10x + 11y = 332

-(5x + 11y)  = 287

                5x = 45

                  x = 9

 

5(9) + 11y = 287

45 + 11y = 287

        11y = 242

           y = 22
