Can you explain the Great schism. I have no idea what the Great schism is or was.

To begin to answer your question, a schism is separation or division between two objects, physical, theoretical, political, intellectual, geographic, or anything that can be separated.

Historically speaking there are 2 prominent points in time[as Mark pointed out] which created a significant point in history.
