Good question

A substance is 99% water .some water evaporates leaving a substance that is 98%water.how much of the water evaporated?

Don't you think the question would be better worded if it asked "what percent of the water evaporated" instead of "how much water evaporated"?  "How much" implies a quantity, such as grams, pounds, milliliters, etc.  Just my opinion.

Hi J.R.S., Sometimes students don't word the problems correctly or ask the question correctly and you have to assume what really is being asked for. Of course, sometimes you make the wrong assumption and do the problem incorrectly. It is a question of semantics. The student should have said "how much water evaporated, written as a percent of the total substance". But he didn't so I assumed that was what he meant. Getting back to semantics, 50%, all of which was water, of the original substance got evaporated.

Actually no, that is why my solution uses w and x as the amounts so that the solution is not dependent of specific values.

But in mathematical terms (and I'm not a mathematician), is % really an "amount", or is it a ratio?  To me, when a question asks "how much", it means to find a value.  Yes, 50% evaporated, but 50% of what?  Otherwise, the question could ask "what fraction or what % of the water evaporated?"  Maybe this is just semantics.  That's why I'm asking, because I don't know.

An interesting foray into the vagaries of English versus mathematics. % definitely is a ratio in the mathematical sense. Per cent literally means "for each hundred." 50% is a ratio, it is one-half of something. Now how much that something is is not defined by the ratio. In this case the amount of the "substance" (quart, gallon, ounce) is not specified. Yet 99 out of 100 parts of it is water.  Now some water is evaporated to create a solution that is 98 parts of water out of 100. So the solution states that 50% (half) of the water evaporating results in the concentration reducing from 99% to 98%. How much that is (quart, gallon, ounce) it dependent on the volume of the starting substance. That is why my solution is for any starting amount.
