If 2/3x=5 what is the value of x ?

This is algebra 1 and I am confused on this concept. Hoping someone can clarify for me. Thanks

Hi Sawna from Clemente...hope you had a great day at school. An Algebra fraction problem...everyone's favorite...Right? NOT!

Anyway...I'm going to give you a hint in beginning to answer this question...but I won't do it for you because once you figure it out...you will see how simple it is. If you still have problems...contact me on Wyzant I will be glad to help.

 

Okay...here we go    your problem....if 2/3x = 5 what is the value of x.   So our goal is to solve for x

Write the problem like the equation below

 

    2

   —     =   5

   3x

 

so after some Algebra magic we will want our equation our equation to look something like this

                         

                                             x   =  some combination of the numbers of 2, 3 and 5

 

Here are the hints: you will be needing to multiply and divide the numbers to get your answer. Remember what you do on one side of the equal sign you will need to do the same thing on the other side of the equal sign.

We will multiply each side of the equal sign by 'x' with will make our equation look like this:

 

                 2
       x   •   —  =  5  •  x 
                3x

 

     From here we can then cancel out the x's on the left side of the equal sign:

 

                       2
               x  •  — = 5 • x
                      3x

 

Alright....there is the start. Make sure you show each step. The more you do these kind of problems, you will become more proficient and they will be not so difficult.

(2/3)x = 5

multiply by the reciprocal of 2/3   which is 3/2

(3/2)(2/3)x = 5(3/2)

x = 15/2

x=7.5
